Washington State Ferries vehicle reservations, foot passengers, parking, the island crossing, and downtown arrival

Anacortes to Friday Harbor ferry

The Washington State Ferry leaves Anacortes for Friday Harbor with cars, bicycles, and walk-on passengers. The route crosses Rosario Strait and winds among forested islands before docking at the foot of Spring Street.

Check Washington State Ferries directly: sailing schedules, vehicle-reservation rules, fares, terminal arrival requirements, and service alerts can change by season and operating conditions.

Vehicle passengers

San Juan Islands sailings use vehicle reservations when offered. A reservation holds space rather than serving as the fare, and terminal check-in rules still apply.

Foot passengers

Walk-on travelers buy passenger tickets and do not reserve vehicle space. The Friday Harbor terminal opens directly into downtown.

Bicycles

Bicycles travel aboard the ferry and offer another way to reach town and island roads, though San Juan Island has hills, narrow shoulders, and changing weather.

Anacortes parking

Terminal parking allows visitors to leave a mainland vehicle and walk aboard. Current lot availability, rates, and shuttle details come from WSF.

The crossing

Forested islands replace the mainland highway

Ferries leave Fidalgo Island and cross open Rosario Strait before entering the San Juan archipelago. Depending on the sailing, the vessel may call at another island or travel directly toward Friday Harbor. Passengers see wooded shorelines, rocky points, marine traffic, and distant mountain ranges from the exterior decks.

Wind on deck is colder than the terminal forecast suggests, even in summer. Indoor passenger cabins provide seating, restrooms, and shelter for the crossing.

The ferry lands in the center of town

Spring Street begins across from the terminal and climbs through Friday Harbor. The marina, whale-watch docks, restaurants, cafés, shops, and many hotels sit within a short walk. The Whale Museum is several blocks uphill.

Visitors staying downtown can arrive without a car. Lime Kiln Point, Roche Harbor, English Camp, American Camp, and Cattle Point require transportation beyond town.
